Business Succession Planning in the Midwest

Blank white image with no visible content

Most business succession plans fail in the family, not in the tax code.

We do the work that keeps them from failing, for closely-held founders age 55+, transitioning their business to the next generation.

When succession planning becomes urgent

You're 55+ and thinking quietly about what happens when you stop running the business.
One child wants the company, one doesn't, and you don't know how to be fair to both.
A key non-family executive has hinted they may leave during the transition.
Your children are in the business and you're wondering - quietly, alone - whether they're truly ready.
Your CPA has mentioned estate tax exposure could force the sale of the business.
You've been putting these conversations off for years and feel the cost growing.

PROCESS

Our Six-Step Process

01

Understanding the Family

Who is in the business and why. What each generation actually wants - said out loud, not assumed.

02

Understanding the Business

Who the business depends on and what is needed for the next generation to be successful.

03

Designing the Transition

How ownership, leadership, and control move - three different things that need to move together. A careful review of the economics to make sure the plan works.

04

Building Stewardship

How decisions get made after the transition. How non-family executives are retained and rewarded. Defining the greater purpose for being in business and making decisions after the transition to make sure it's in alignment with the founders.

05

Securing the Management

Many of the key players will never own stock but without them the business could fail. Incentive and retention plans are a must.

06

Legal & Tax Architecture

Sales transactions, recapitalizations, gift plans, IDGTs, and buy-sell agreements in coordination with your CPA and Attorney.

07

Implementation & Follow-Through

The plan only works if it gets executed. We stay with you - for years, if that's what it takes.

OUR APPROACH

"The technical work of succession planning is widely available. What is rare is an advisor who can sit with you while you face the hardest question of your professional life - Have I actually raised the kind of children who can carry what I built? - and walk with you through what comes after the answer."
